Have you heard about Quinoa?

Have you heard about the grain called quinoa? It is pronounced Keen-wah. Quinoa is a grain many people have not heard of before but it is fast becoming a favorite for those that try it.

It has become a staple in my house and I actually crave it. It is one of the most versatile grains and it has a tremendous amount of health benefits and is super easy to make. You can actually buy quinoa at most grocery store chains now. You may have to ask what aisle, but it is typically there as it is becoming more and more popular. It is originally from the Andean region in South America and is over 5,000 years old.

Why eat quinoa? What are the health benefits and is it really that easy to make?

Benefits of eating quinoa:

  • It is high in protein
  • It is a complete protein, which means it contains all essential amino acids
  • It is a good source of manganese, magnesium, iron, copper and phosphorus
  • It is a good source of fiber as well as B vitamins
  • It is gluten-free, which is great for those that have a gluten intolerance

Quinoa is very easy to make.

Take 1 cup of quinoa and 2 cups of water and bring to a bowl. Cover and simmer for about 10 – 12 minutes until it looks fluffy with white spiral threads appear around the grain.

You can add vegetables, black beans, salsa, chick peas or any other vegetable along with some olive oil and sea salt and have a delicious dish. I have experimented with sautéing onion and garlic with whatever vegetables or greens I have in the house, along with some sea salt and olive oil and it is always yummy. You can even make it into a morning dish by adding cinnamon, a little milk and honey or maple syrup.

Next time you are the store get some quinoa and experiment for yourself. It is easy and so versatile and delicious!

I just made a commitment to start working with Carrie at the start of this year! We’ve already had a couple amazing sessions! She suggested I try Quinoa and I can’t say enough about how amazing this product is! I cook up a batch, leave it in my refrig, and use it w/cinnamon and sugar for breakfast some mornings, and then use it with taco seasoning for lunch on lettuce! It’s so filling and tastes great! Thanks Carrie!
