Aha Number 23: Destruction is Creation
This chapter is a good one. It reminds me of how when a person is trying to change a habit. Often a person will make a change but it doesn’t stick and they go back to their old ways. The authors use the term “hysteresis”, which means the tendency for materials to snap back to their original shape once the pressure that is being applied is no longer there. They used the example of melting steel. When it is being heated it melts and when the heat is taken away it goes back to its original state.
When someone wants to make a permanent change the authors suggest that enough pressure has to be applied to exceed the old conditioning so that the person doesn’t bounce back to their old ways and instead comes to a new level in life. I really like this idea because it reminds me of how I support my clients.
My clients have a goal for themselves and I support them so that they make permanent changes to create a new level of wellness. Often times, my clients have tried before on their own and they just needed a little more support and guidance to really make their old ways go to the waste side . . . interesting how this correlates to what I do while working with others.
The authors suggest that one way to help in the process of permanent change is visioning. Create the vision that you want and allow it to be so strong that it dominates your thoughts, and choices. They also suggest that we eliminate one habit or attitude that is preventing us from manifesting what we want. They suggest that we commit to keep it off limits and to add one new pattern of thought or action that will help accomplish what we want.
I like that they authors used nutrition as an example. They suggest that you get good nutrition so that you have the energy to reach the Enlightened Millionaire status. I do believe that good nutrition helps with energy and the way that we think each day. I often say if you eat like junk you’re going to think like junk. Meaning your thoughts are probably going to be more negative in nature.
An activity suggested in this chapter is to commit to writing one habit you want to get rid of and one you want to bring into your life. The suggestion is to read those each morning and night. Also, to not worry if you fail one day just get back to it the next day. I liked the quote in this chapter by Henry Ford, “Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.”
When I think about what I want to accomplish and what might be holding me back I realize that I need to continue to make an effort to spend my time wisely and stay focused. I can often get side tracked and start other projects while I still have another one going on. This could of course be a way to avoid or procrastinate but when I sit and think about it I know the direction I want to go in life. I know I need to keep moving forward on that path and I know that I need to stop taking detour’s here and there. So with that, I commit to trying harder to stay on track and to stop being side-tracked by things that are not a priority.
This chapter was a very good reminder! Thumbs up!
